The Mapmaker's Son, Volume II
Cyprus to the Swahili Coast, 1495 to 1500
He has a new name, a steady hand and a berth on the India fleet. What he is looking for is not on any chart.
Cyprus, 1495. The banner of Saint Mark flies over the island, and Antonio Pera, called Falco, has learned to pass for what he says he is: a quiet mapmaker with no past worth asking about. Beside him walks Don Pedro Almirón, the disgraced lawyer who shared his cell in Seville and is still writing it all down.
From the cane fields of Venetian Cyprus to the mastic groves of Genoese Chios, from a Genoa at war with itself to the Lisbon quays where his father’s debts still wait, Falco takes the commissions that keep his cover alive. None of them stays simple: a ransom racket on the Sultan's doorstep, a chart route the Portuguese crown guards like gold, a fort at Mina where the gold is counted twice.
Then, in Ragusa, an informant sells him a story: a Genoese girl carried off when Constantinople fell, sold on years later to a buyer in Zanzibar. True or bait, it points where Portugal's new fleet is going. In March 1500 Falco sails with it, by way of a new land in the west, around Africa and up the Swahili coast.
Every episode closes with a Chronicler’s Note: the real history behind the story, the treaties, decrees, ships and numbers, told plainly. Read the adventure, then find out how much of it actually happened.
